AAMS works with OU for as-needed issue-based mediation and scheduled mediation and conflict resolution trainings.
AAMS works closely with Ohio University to offer mediation as an option in resolving workplace conflict. The mediation can be highly effective in situations where people need to find collaborative ways to work together. When all parties have a vested interest in improving interactions with co-workers, intra-departmental, or inter-departmental, mediation can be an effective solution. Mediation does not replace the normal university grievance procedures, nor other support services that may exist. Mediation is an additional, confidential option that individuals or departments can elect to utilize. Mediations can be scheduled quickly once referrals are made. Names or details of sessions will not be disclosed to anyone.
University staff, faculty, and administrators have utilized this service many times over the last five years to handle a number of conflicts. Issues have included but are not limited to:
Mediation and Conflict Resolution Training
We all help many groups with training in handling difficulties effectively. Our trainings are highly participatory, geared to the needs of those attending, and, surprisingly, relaxed and enjoyable. Many groups have reported a big shift in their ability to communicate well and work together more smoothly as a result.
We also offer a regular training series in the fundamentals of mediation for those who want to learn more. These trainings are offered four times each year, with three or four sessions totaling fourteen hours. We focus on developing listening and questioning skills that help people explore a crucial issue, “where do we go from here?” Participants report new understandings and growth from engaging with a diverse group around these important communication issues.

A collaborative effort shared by Havar Inc., Athens Area Mediation Service, City of Athens, Department of Community Arts, Parks, and Recreation, and 18 small business sponsors. Putt People First is the only outdoor, 18-hole miniature golf course in Athens County. Featured businesses contribute $500 per year and design their own hole. Business sponsor fees are divided by the two non-profit organizations. We intend that the course will provide many years of family entertainment for Athens County and fund-raised income for the non-profit lead sponsors.
